The city walls made from massive quarry stones were built in the last quarter of the 14th century and the major parts of the walls are still preserved. The wall is 7 to 10 metres high, plus a crown of breastwork of some 2 metres height. The wall is 1.5 to 1.7 m thick; the breastwork is 0.6 m thick.
In front of the city walls, is the moat, about 20 to 25 metres wide and originally 5 to 8 metres deep. In the past it was filled with water. It was drained in the 18th century and gardens were planted. Each side of the city walls – in the east, south and west – had stately fortified towers.
The gates built in modern times, the Posttor, Sudetentor and Feuerwehrtor, are the connections between old town and the outskirts in the south.
